The Cupa României in the 1976/77 season was the 39th tournament for the Romanian Football Cup . The winner was Universitatea Craiova for the first time , which was able to prevail in the final on July 3, 1977 against defending champion Steaua Bucharest . This qualified Universitatea Craiova for the European Cup Winners' Cup .

The clubs of Divizia A only started in the round of the last 32 teams. From the round of 16 onwards, all games - apart from the final, which traditionally took place in Bucharest - were played on a neutral pitch. Only one game was played at a time. If this was a draw after 90 minutes, an extension of 30 minutes followed. If there was still no decision after that, it was brought about on penalties .
