Ștefan Sameş (born October 14, 1951 in Dobroeşti , Ilfov County ; † July 17, 2011 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian football player and coach . The defender played 388 games in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A , and was voted Romania's Footballer of the Year in 1979.

Player career

societies

Sameş began playing football in 1965 in the Bucharest Children's and Junior Center Steaua "23 August" . He played for Steaua Bucharest in his youth and moved to Universitatea Craiova in 1971 , where he made his debut in the Romanian top division, Divizia A , on November 28, 1971 . He developed into a regular player over the course of the season and had his share of the runner-up in the following year . He returned to Steaua in 1973 in exchange with Costică Ștefănescu and was also able to conquer a regular place there.

With Steaua, Sameş was able to win the championship in 1976 and 1978 and the Romanian Cup in 1976 and 1979 . In the same year he was voted Romania's Footballer of the Year .

Sameş left Steaua in the winter break of the 1982/83 season and moved to league rivals FC Constanța , who fought to stay up. Even with the support of Sameș it was not possible to avoid relegation, as this was only used in half of the games. He moved to Rapid Bucharest after the end of the season , which had just been promoted to Divizia A. With Rapid he was able to secure relegation twice, but was then hardly used in 1985/86 , so he left the club and joined the second division ROVA Roșiori . At the end of the season he rose with the club in Divizia C and ended his career. He took this up again briefly in the 1988/89 season at the age of 37 with a few games for Siretul Paşcani .

National team

Sameş played 49 games for the Romanian national football team and scored three goals. He came to his first use on April 18, 1973 in the friendly against the Soviet Union . During his time in the national team, he was not allowed to take part in an international tournament because Romania always missed the qualification. His last international match was a friendly against the GDR on November 17, 1982 , when he came on for Ioan Andone in the 55th minute .

Coaching career

After his retirement Sames was in the second half of 1989/90 coach of Universitatea Cluj and led the club to relegation in the Divizia A . He later worked as the youth coach of his former club Steaua Bucharest . Due to financial bottlenecks, George Becali , the club's patron , dismissed a number of youth coaches, including Sameș, on February 23, 2011. In late February 2011, he suffered a stroke over the excitement about his discharge , which resulted in paralysis of the vocal cords. In the course of the medical examinations, a nasopharyngeal carcinoma was discovered in early March 2011 that could no longer be operated on. After Sameș and his wife were unable to pay for the treatment costs themselves and appeals for donations remained unsuccessful, the former defender succumbed to cancer on July 17, 2011 in the Spitalul Militar in Bucharest.
