Radu Troi (born June 12, 1949 in Dragomireşti , Giurgiu County ) is a former Romanian football player . He denied 179 games in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A .

Career as a player

Troi began playing football at UREMOAS Bucharest and moved to the Romanian top club Dinamo Bucharest in 1969 . There he was part of the first team in Divizia A , but was not used. During the 1970/71 season he left the club and moved to Divizia B for Metalul Bucharest . There he developed into a regular player. The club did not manage to move up to Divizia A during this time. Nevertheless, he reached the semi-finals of the Romanian Cup both in the 1970/71 season and a year later with Metalul .

In 1972 Troi made a new attempt to gain a foothold in the first division, joining the reigning champions FC Argeş Piteşti . There he made his breakthrough. Although he did not attract attention as a striker with high scores, he was still an integral part of the team and became a national player . In his first season he played with Argeş in the European Cup and reached the second round, where he and his team brought the Spanish champions Real Madrid to a defeat after a win in the first leg, but were eliminated. In the league , his club finished third and qualified for the UEFA Cup , but did not survive the first round there.

After FC Argeș had slipped into midfield of Divizia A in the following years, Troi moved to league rivals Steaua Bucharest in 1975 . With the record champions he won his first title in 1976 with the double of championship and cup . In contrast to his previous positions, he had to assert himself against strong competition at Steaua and had to regularly fight for his regular place. After the runner-up in 1977 behind Dinamo Bucharest, his second championship followed at the end of the 1977/78 season.

Troi ended his career in 1979.

National team

Troi played 16 games for the Romanian national soccer team and scored three goals. He made his debut on April 18, 1973 in a friendly against the Soviet Union . Under national coach Valentin Stănescu he was part of the extended squad, but was only used irregularly. Stănescu's successor, Ștefan Kovács , did not rely on him at the beginning of 1976, but brought him back in the autumn of the same year. Troi was mostly used in friendly matches and played for his country for the last time on September 21, 1977 in a 6-1 win over Greece .

Career as a coach

After the end of his active career, Troi worked as a youth coach for his former club Steaua Bucharest . From 1986 to 1988 he was assistant coach of the first team under Anghel Iordănescu .
