When Skanderbeg Square was redesigned in the 1960s, a hotel was also planned. After the Palace of Culture built in the 1960s, construction of the hotel, the second large Soviet-style building , began in the early 1970s . The National Historical Museum followed as the third magnificent building on Skanderbeg Square . Prefabricated concrete elements were mainly used for the construction of the hotel . The hotel was inaugurated in 1979 after around ten years of construction as the Hotel Tirana with 324 rooms at the time. The team of architects headed by Valentina Pistoli included Petraq Kolevica, Koço Çomi, M. Pepa, Klement Kolaneci and N. Theodhosi.

With its 15 floors, the Hotel Tirana was the tallest building in Albania until well into the 1990s, and with its white facade it was visible for many kilometers. It is 56 meters high.

In the 1980s, the Hotel Tirana was a popular meeting place for members of the Politburo - secret underground escape routes ensured their safety.

In 1993 the hotel was sold to a joint venture between the Albanian state and an Italian hotel chain with funds and loans from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development . The hotel was now under the management of the Italian hotel chain. In the following years the house was completely overhauled inside and out. It was given its current appearance. Since it reopened in March 1995, the name has been Tirana International . For a couple of years it was the premier house in town.

In 2001 the hotel was renovated again to meet international standards. In 2004 the Albanian state sold its stake in the hotel to a local consortium of entrepreneurs.

The Tirana International now has 166 rooms and suites. It is one of the most important congress and event centers in Tirana. As a typical urban business hotel, there are only a few green and parking spaces around the house. The restaurant and bar still serve as the central meeting point for the people of Tirana.
