painting

Georg Königstein was inspired by the works of Cézanne and Picasso during stays in Paris and New York at a young age and decided to carry on their historical legacy.

His analytical approach to reality, exploring it, defining it in clear compositions, dominates his early work. It is characterized by monochrome colors. The focus is on the cubist examination of shapes and lines. Without completely abandoning representationalism, he developed his own, individual visual language in order to create a multidimensional visual space with lines and surfaces in harmony and tension.

Thematically, he focuses on landscapes and female bodies, which are given an individual touch through representational attributes. He makes use of a multi-perspective . It finds its unmistakable expression in a synthesis of cubist pictorial space and expressionist use of color. In further development he allows the relief-like picture space with expressive coloring to grow together to form a multi-layered space-time structure. Visible contours develop into structure-forming lines, lie over clearly delimited surfaces, graded in color, create space within the surface, condense color space into bodies and landscapes. The natural body colors are dissolved in color surfaces that encompass objects, they carry light, create atmosphere and mood. Exuberant exhilaration is tamed by visible lines and strictly limited division. The viewer experiences innovative solutions that lead him to independent, creative perception.

Illustration, press printing and publishing activities

In addition to painting, Georg Königstein also deals with book illustrations . These prints are made with the techniques of etching , woodcut and color linocut with a lost plate. They are incorporated into artist books and bibliophile books in numbered and signed small editions with a focus on contemporary Austrian authors as original graphics.
