Harald Friedl (born August 2, 1958 in Steyr , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian filmmaker , musician and writer .

life and work

After graduating from high school in Steyr , Harald Friedl studied German and English at the University of Salzburg. He was a lecturer at the University of Kingston upon Hull in Yorkshire, England, and then a researcher at the Institute for Everyday Culture in Salzburg. 1991–93 he was the first director of the Salzburg Literature House, and since 1993 he has worked as a freelance filmmaker, writer and musician. From 1980 he was director and producer of numerous films for cinema and television, author of several books and many short stories in anthologies and literary magazines as well as song texts. He also played with various rock bands.

In 2001 and 2003 Friedl was visiting professor at the German Summer School at the University of New Mexico, USA; 2003 also Max Kade Artist in Residence at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. In addition, he held numerous guest lectures at Californian universities, and in 2012/13 he was visiting professor for German studies and film at California State University Long Beach .

Friedl lives in Mitterretzbach / Lower Austria and in Vienna .
