There is a documentary from that time by Harald Friedl , in which traditional Viennese retail outlets are portrayed that still defy the competition of the large retail chains.
content
The documentation portrays a butcher's shop, a drugstore, a leather goods store and the Knopfkönig haberdashery as well as their owners and staff. All of these businesses suffer from overwhelming competition from the large retail chains. They persistently try to assert themselves against this pressure.
The focus is on the slow rhythm of routine tasks, waiting for customers, talking to them and talking to themselves that the business owners have in the breaks in between. The sitters are hardly irritated by the presence of the camera.
In a “standard” interview, the director Harald Friedl described the shops portrayed as “biotopes of an old shop culture” and the “counterpart of a culture of the scanner checkout”. At the same time, however, “not being able to let go” and “remaining in conditions that are logically not sensible” are treated in the film.
