The Cupa României in the 1996/97 season was the 59th tournament for the Romanian Football Cup . The winner for the 20th time was defending champion Steaua Bucharest , who won the final on June 4, 1997 against FC Național Bucharest . Since Steaua also won the championship , Național qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup .

The clubs of Divizia A only started in the round of the last 32 teams. From the round of 16 onwards, all games - apart from the final, which was traditionally played in Bucharest - took place in a neutral place. Only one game was played at a time. If this was a draw after 90 minutes, an extension of 30 minutes followed. If after that there was still no decision, the decision was made on penalties .
