FC Progresul Bucharest , until summer 2007 FC Na FCional Bucharest ( Fotbal Club Național Bucureşti ), is a Romanian football club from Bucharest . Since 2009 he has been playing in the fourth highest soccer league, League IV . He achieved his greatest success in 1960 when he won the Romanian Cup. Between 1995 and 2003 he was one of the best Romanian clubs and was able to win the runner-up several times.

The association began in December 1865, when Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza founded the Societatea de Dare de Semn , a group of sports enthusiasts , in Parcul cu Platani , the location of today's Cotroceni Stadium . In 1944 this group became an association, Banca Națională a României Bucureşti ( BNR Bucharest ), the sports club of the Romanian National Bank .

After the communists came to power in the winter of 1947/48, the BNR also changed its name, and in the process the association, which from 1949 onwards under the name Spartac Banca Republica Populară Română Bucureşti ( Spartac Banca RPR Bucureşti ), Spartak Bank of the Romanian People's Republic , acted. During this time the club played in the Divizia B . There succeeded in the 1954 season, the first jump into the highest Romanian league, Divizia A , after the club had renamed itself in 1953 first in Spartac Finanțe Bănci Bucureşti ( Spartac FB Bucharest ) and in 1954 in Progresul Finanțe Bănci Bucureşti ( Progresul FB Bucharest ). In terms of sport, Progresul was able to hold onto Divizia A for ten years. The greatest success during this period came in 1960 when he won the Romanian Cup. In 1958 the club had at least reached the final, while the best placing third places in the seasons 1955 and 1961/62 . After relegation in 1965, as well as after relegation in 1969, the club succeeded in being promoted again immediately. However, Progresul was part of Divizia A only rarely during the 1970s and 1980s, with only four seasons being recorded. Instead, the club experienced its temporary low point in 1988 with the descent to Divizia C - but no longer under the name Progresul Bucharest, but as Progresul-Voin Voa Bucharest , after he had started as Progresul Vulcan Bucharest from 1977 to 1987 . After two further name changes - Progresul Energia Bucharest from 1988 and Progresul Șoimii IMUC Bucharest from 1989 - the return to Divizia B succeeded in 1990.

After the association had resumed its old name Progresul Bucharest in 1991 and the Romanian National Bank ( Banca Națională a României ) had re-entered as a sponsor, it was able to return to Divizia A in 1992 henceforth FC Național Bucharest . In the second half of the 1990s, Național rose to the top of the Romanian ranks and won the Romanian runner-up in 1996, 1997 and 2002. In addition, the club reached the cup final in 1997, 2003 and 2006, but lost each time. The big coup, winning the championship, did not succeed. Național was mostly placed in the front midfield, so the club did not continuously take part in the European Cup.

At the end of the 2006/07 season , Național surprisingly rose from the highest league, which was called League 1 since the beginning of the season, and played for two years in the second-rate league 2. After relegation and the departure of the sponsor, the name was back in SC FC Progresul Bucharest changed. In the second division season 2008/09 the mountain of debt grew so high that payments to coaches and players were initially set. When Bulgarian goalkeeper Radostin Stanew sued his former club for outstanding salaries at FIFA and Progresul failed to comply, the club was punished with a three-point deduction in March 2009. After Progresul on the 23rd matchday against Dunărea Giurgiu and on the 24th matchday against CS Concordia Chiajna failed, the Romanian Football Association decided to exclude them from the championship. In August 2009, the club was re-founded by the lawyer Bogdan Tohăneanu under the name AS FC Progresul Bucharest and competes in Liga IV , the championship of the Bucharest Municipality. The Cotroceni Stadium was left for financial reasons, the team's home games initially took place in the smaller Coresi Stadium near Casa Presei Libere . In 2011 Progresul played in the Electroaparataj Stadium, as the BNR still refused to waive the club's old debts of 300,000 euros.
