Casa Presei Libere

The Casa Presei Libere ( German  House of the Free Press , until 1989 Casa Scînteii ) is a building in the style of socialist classicism in the north of Bucharest . It was the tallest building in the city from 1956 to 2007 when it was replaced by the Tower Center . The House of the Free Press is located on the Square of the Free Press ( Romanian Piața Presei Libere ) and borders the Parcul Regele Mihai I al României .

history

The building was designed by the architect Horia Maicu , who modeled it on Lomonosov University in Moscow . It was named after the party newspaper Scînteia of the Romanian Communist Party as Casa Scînteii and was home to their and other newspaper offices.

After the Romanian Revolution , the building, now renamed the House of the Free Press, served as the editorial building for several Romanian press products.

Aripi monument

A statue of Lenin in front of the building was torn down during the Romanian Revolution. The Aripi monument ( Romanian wing ) for the victims of the anti-communist resistance in Romania and Bessarabia between 1945 and 1989 was erected on the remaining base in 2016 , a steel structure over 20 meters high and weighing 100 tons by the sculptor Mihai Buculei .
