Marius Cornel Popa (born July 31, 1978 in Oradea , Bihor County ) is a former Romanian football goalkeeper . He played a total of 210 games in the Romanian League 1 .

Career

Popa's career started in his home country at FC Bihor Oradea . Since the 1997/98 season he was part of the professional squad. Three years later he opted for a move to FC Naţional Bucharest in the Divizia A . There he belonged first to the squad of the reserve team or was only a supplementary player in the 1st team. His breakthrough came in 2003 and he became the banker's regular goalkeeper . In the winter break of 2004/05 a change to FCU Politehnica Timișoara took place . He was followed at the same time by his coach in Bucharest, Cosmin Olăroiu , and his teammates Gabriel Cânu , Gabriel Caramarin and Gigel Coman .

In Timişoara he was initially the undisputed number 1. In the final of the Romanian Cup against Rapid Bucharest , he could not accumulate due to an injury and weak form. At that time he was represented by Costel Pantilimon . But even this did not show a constant performance, so that Popa quickly returned to the goal of the Poli .

After Popa was replaced by Pantilimon as a regular goalkeeper at the beginning of the 2008/09 season , he was no longer used and moved to the promoted Internațional Curtea de Argeş at the end of the season . When his new club was revoked a year later, he moved to league rivals Pandurii Târgu Jiu at the beginning of the 2010/11 season . After half a year he moved on to Universitatea Cluj . He ended his active career there in 2012.

National team

Although Popa showed good performances in League 1 early on , he had to wait a long time before his commitment for the Romanian national soccer team . At the beginning of 2008 he was allowed to stand between the posts for his country for the first time. He made his debut in the game against Russia . For the European Football Championship in 2008 in Switzerland and Austria , he was nominated by national coach Victor Pițurcă , but then came on no more assignments.
