Gabriel Cânu (born January 18, 1981 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian football player . The central defender has been under contract with ACS Poli Timișoara in Liga 1 since summer 2014 .
Career
Cânu's career began at FC Național Bucharest , where he played for the first time in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A (today League 1 ) on June 2, 1999 . After no more games were added in the 1999/2000 season, he was loaned to Divizia B to Cimentul Fieni . There he became a regular player and managed to stay up with his club. After his return to Bucharest, another loan deal followed in 2001. With FC Baia Mare he finished second in Divizia B behind UTA Arad and had to admit defeat to FC Farul Constanța in the relegation games . It was not until the 2003/04 season that he was regularly used at his home club Național , but was rarely part of the team in the first half of the 2004/05 season .
During the winter break, Cânu left the capital and moved to league rivals FCU Politehnica Timișoara . There he was used regularly, but without being able to assert himself permanently as a regular player. With the ambitious western Romanians, he was initially able to place himself in the midfield. In the 2006/07 season he just missed a qualification for the UI Cup and moved into the cup final in the same year , where he was defeated, however, with his team Rapid Bucharest . The following season the club finished in sixth place and qualified for the UEFA Cup .
In the summer of 2008, Cânu received an offer from league rivals FC Vaslui and moved to West Moldova . Cânu became a regular player, but missed the entire 2009/10 season due to injury and did not return until October 2010. In April 2013, his contract was terminated after he had only been used once in the 2012/13 season . In the summer of 2013 he joined first division club Ceahlăul Piatra Neamț . A year later he signed Liga 1 relegated ACS Poli Timișoara . After being promoted again in 2015 , he returned to the House of Lords with Poli, where he and his team secured the class remaining in the relegation round in the 2015/16 season . Also in the 2016/17 season he played with Poli against relegation. The class was only ensured in the relegation. In the 2017/18 season , he and his team could no longer avoid relegation and finished the league in penultimate place.
