ACS Poli Timișoara is a Romanian football club from Timișoara , which plays in the second highest Romanian league, Liga II . Since 2016, the association has also been officially recognized as the successor to the association founded in 1921.
History of the club
prehistory
The FC Politehnica Timişoara was founded in 1921 and played from 1946 to 1997 over several decades regularly at the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A . The club's greatest successes were the cup wins in 1958 and 1980 . He was one of the most popular clubs in the country.
After the Romanian Revolution and the subsequent privatization of Romanian football clubs, “Poli”, as the club is called, steadily went downhill. After relegation in 1997 , the Italian Claudio Zambon took over the club to bring it back to the House of Lords. Instead, Poli found himself in a relegation battle. After a dispute with the city of Timișoara , he moved the club to Bucharest .
Start-up
A year after the relocation, the second division AEK Bucharest under coach Stelian Gherman managed to move up to Divizia A. Then the former Romanian international Anton Doboș , owner of AEK and a former classmate Gherman, decided to relocate his club to Timișoara, there in Bucharest Due to the strong competition, hardly any spectators came to the games. To arouse the interest of the audience in Timișoara, he changed the club name to Politehnica AEK Timișoara . The new club was supposed to continue the tradition of Politehnica Timișoara and the audience interest exceeded expectations.
After the club ran into difficulties again in terms of sport and threatened relegation in the 2004/05 season , Doboş Poli sold in December 2004 to Balkan Petroleum , which changed the club name to FCU Politehnica Timişoara , because the addition AEK had been chosen by Doboş because he had previously played for AEK Athens . Balkan Petroleum invested in new players and got some additions from league rivals FC Național Bucharest - including coach Cosmin Olăroiu . After an excellent second half of the season, he led the team to 6th place, was replaced by Gheorghe Hagi the following autumn and Balkan Petroleum again invested around ten million euros in new players. Despite the large investments and many coaching changes, Poli has so far not been able to reach the top of Romanian football.
The proximity of the club, now renamed FCU Politehnica 1921 Știința Timişoara , to its predecessor club Politehnica Timişoara, suggested by the choice of name and the purple club color, prompted FIFA and the Romanian football association FRF to change the club's name and club colors by June 30, 2008 to let. Since July 5, 2008, the club was now called FC Timișoara . Because of keeping the violet jerseys, the FC was punished as threatened with a six-point deduction for the 2008/09 season . The decision provoked clashes between more than a thousand fans of the club and the police.
In an appeal hearing before the CAS sports court , the six-point deduction was lifted on June 11, 2009, which meant that the club qualified for the third qualifying round of the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League . There he surprisingly defeated the reigning UEFA Cup winner Shakhtar Donetsk and played in the play-off games against the German club VfB Stuttgart . However, with a 2-0 defeat in the first leg and a 0-0 defeat in the second leg in Stuttgart, they couldn't prevail and thus missed the group stage.
Recovery of history rights
In a court ruling by a Romanian civil court published on February 24, 2011, it was decided that the club FC Politehnica Timișoara, which is owned by Claudio Zambon and playing in Bucharest, is not legally the successor to Politehnica Timișoara, but that the club led by Marian Iancu owns these rights. The Bucharest Association was dissolved retrospectively as a result of this procedure. The opportunity to appeal against this judgment was not taken. Then Marian Iancu announced that his club would return to the original name FC Politehnica Timișoara. This renaming was carried out under civil law, but a return to the original name under sports law is not possible during the ongoing league operation. This was planned for the start of the new 2011/2012 season. However, since the second half of the season, the club led by Marian Iancu had the original club crest again and the name Politehnica Timișoara both on the official website and on the official jerseys.
The history of the club now comprised: In League 1: 1,320 games, 498 wins, 316 draws, 506 defeats, with a goal difference of 1,746: 1,823 and 1,312 points. In addition, two Romanian cup wins (1958, 1980), six lost cup finals (1974, 1981, 1983, 1992, 2007, 2009) and two runner-up titles (2009, 2011) ( as of October 31, 2011 ).
Dissolution and re-establishment
The Romanian football association Federația Română de Fotbal refused the license to FC Timișoara because of debts with the Romanian state and the Portuguese football club Benfica Lisbon . The club appealed against the judgment confirmed by UEFA to the International Court of Sport (CAS), which was dismissed in July 2011. The withdrawal of the license resulted in a forced relegation of the Romanian runner-up from the first to League II . The 2011/12 season ended the club in first place, but renounced promotion because not all debts had been paid. The association was dissolved in 2012. A short time later he was re-established as ACS Poli Timișoara and played again in League II. A year later, after the end of the 2012/13 season , the club rose again to League 1. The relegation did not succeed there, however, so Poli played again in the League II in the 2014/15 season. However, the club managed to get promoted again immediately and is now back in League I. In the 2017/18 season , the club was second to last in League II.
