Emerson Moisés Costa (born April 12, 1972 in Rio de Janeiro ), short Emerson , is a former Brazilian football player . The midfielder last played for the Cypriot first division club APOEL Nicosia .
The strong running player began his career with Flamengo Rio de Janeiro in his hometown, from where he moved to Coritiba FC a few years after starting . From here he went to Belenenses Lisbon in Portugal in 1992 . He made a name for himself with the bigger clubs in the country through good performances and was signed by the top club FC Porto in 1994 . Under English coach Bobby Robson , Emerson won the Portuguese championship title twice in a row and the 1996 Super Cup in Portugal. This was also his last title in Portugal, as he moved to the traditional English club Middlesbrough in the summer of the same year .
He only stayed here for a year and a half, and in January 1998 he and his wife flew back to Brazil. As reasons he gave difficulties with the living conditions. He announced that he would “never return to Europe”. He did not follow this statement after all, but switched to CD Tenerife in Spain a short time later . When he was relegated with his club, they tried in Middlesbrough to bring Emerson back. This refused, however, and moved within Spain to Deportivo La Coruña . The most disappointing period of his career followed: Neither in Galicia nor at Atlético Madrid or the Glasgow Rangers , he was able to prevail. After he failed the Scots , he went back to his home country in 2004 to join the CR Vasco da Gama club . A year after returning, he received an offer from the Greek first division club Skoda Xanthi . There he became a regular again and soon became a fixture in defensive midfield. Only half a year after signing the contract, he was poached by AEK Athens . In the summer of 2007 he then signed a contract with the Cyprus association APOEL Nicosia . In the summer of 2009, Emerson decided to end his playing career.
