( Thomas , 1890)

The Borneo mountain squirrel ( Sundasciurus everetti , Syn . : Dremomys everetti ) is a species of squirrel from the genus of the Sunda tree squirrel ( Sundasciurus ). It occurs on the island of Borneo .

features

The Borneo mountain squirrel reaches a head-torso length of about 15.5 to 17.5 centimeters with a weight of about 130 grams. The tail becomes 9.8 to 10.0 centimeters long and is thus significantly shorter than the rest of the body. The animals are dark brown on top with a slight mottling. The ventral side is gray with sand-colored hair with white tips. The tail is black with red-tipped hair.

distribution

The Borneo mountain squirrel is found in northern Borneo in the Malay states of Sarawak and Sabah as well as the Indonesian Kalimantan . The altitude distribution is above 975 meters.

Way of life

Little information is available about the way of life of the Borneo mountain squirrel. It is a ground-living (terrestrial) squirrel and lives mainly in primary forests of the highlands, but also occurs in secondary forest stands and orchards. It feeds primarily on insects, which made up around 35% of the diet in random samples, as well as earthworms, fruits, nuts, leaves and buds.

Systematics

The Borneo mountain squirrel is classified as an independent species within the genus of the Sunda tree squirrel ( Sundasciurus ), which consists of 18 species. The first scientific description comes from Oldfield Thomas from 1890, who described the species using individuals from Mount Penrisen in western Sarawak, Malaysia. Originally the Borneo mountain squirrel was assigned to the red -cheeked squirrel ( Dremomys ), but according to recent molecular biological studies it is more closely related to the species of the Sunda tree squirrel and is accordingly assigned to this genus as Sundasciurus everetti .

Apart from the nominate form, no subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Status, threat and protection

The Borneo mountain squirrel is classified as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). This is justified by the frequent occurrence of the species, especially at high altitudes that are little affected by habitat loss. It is also seen as adaptable to disturbances and habitat changes.
