Friedrich Wilhelm Siegmund von der Marwitz (born August 22, 1726 in Grabow , † November 22, 1788 in Bielefeld ) was a Prussian major general and chief of the Marwitz regiment on foot .

Life

origin

He was the son of Alexander Magnus Kurt von der Marwitz (1693-1743) and his wife Charlotte Lucretia, born von Ilow († 1754). His father was a captain in the infantry regiment "von Forcade" and heir to Grabow in the Neumark. His brother was the later major general Kurt August von der Marwitz (1737-1808).

Military career

Marwitz visited the cadet house in Berlin from March 1743 and on January 25, 1746 was hired as a non-commissioned officer in the regiment of Prince August Ferdinand of Prussia . Here he was promoted to second lieutenant until November 1754 . During the Seven Years' War he advanced to captain and company commander and fought near Lobositz , Prague and Leuthen . For his bravery in the battle of Liegnitz he was awarded the order Pour le Mérite .

In 1768 he became a major and took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession as a lieutenant colonel in 1778/79 . Marwitz was appointed colonel on July 7, 1779 and regimental commander on May 22, 1781. On May 22, 1787 he was promoted to major general and shortly afterwards Marwitz received the infantry regiment "von Stwolinsky" with which he marched to Wesel to fight the unrest that had developed in the Netherlands.

family

Marwitz had married Christiane Friederike Karoline von Woldeck (1730-1804) in 1766 . She was the half sister of Lieutenant General Hans Christoph von Woldeck . The marriage produced three sons:
