Kurt August von der Marwitz (born March 2, 1737 on Grabow ; † May 8, 1808 in Perleberg ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

He was the son of Alexander Magnus Kurt von der Marwitz (1693-1743) and his wife Charlotte Lucretia, born von Ilow († 1754). His father was a captain in the infantry regiment "von Forcade" and heir to Grabow in the Neumark. Major General Friedrich Wilhelm Siegmund von der Marwitz was his brother.

Military career

Marwitz came in 1752 as a standard junker in the cuirassier regiment "Prince of Prussia" of the Prussian army . During the Seven Years' War he fought in the battles near Lobositz , Kolin , Breslau , Zorndorf , Liegnitz , Torgau , Reichenbach and the sieges of Prague , Dresden and Schweidnitz . During that time he became a cornet on January 12, 1757 and a lieutenant on June 3, 1759.

After the war Marwitz was on May 24, 1765 staff assistant master and on June 13, 1767 Rittmeister and company commander . As such, he took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession . On October 2, 1782 he rose to major , was promoted to lieutenant colonel on September 15, 1790 , and was appointed regimental commander on December 24, 1790. On May 12, 1792, Marwitz received the order Pour le Mérite and one month later was promoted to colonel . In the First Coalition War , he fought at the siege of Mainz . On May 20, 1800, because of his sickness, he received his resignation as major general with a pension of 1000 thalers. Marwitz died unmarried on May 8, 1808 in Perleberg.
