The memorial was built from 1962 to 1970 on the initiative of the New Zealand major GS Carter ( DSO ). The memorial, designed in the form of a fort and designed by the architect JC Robinson, consists of four interconnected parts. The first three park-like areas symbolize the nations involved in the death marches, Australia, Great Britain and various ethnic groups from Borneo . In the fourth area, a pool surrounded by columns invites you to linger and reflect.
