Ranau is a city in the Malaysian state of Sabah . It is located in the mountainous region of the Crocker Ranges in the north of the island of Borneo and belongs to the administrative district of the same name ( Ranau district ). Ranau is part of the West Coast Division area which includes the districts of Kota Kinabalu , Ranau, Kota Belud , Tuaran , Penampang , Putatan and Papar .

Etymology

The name Ranau is derived from the word Ranahon , which means rice fields in the language of the Dusun . Although the rice that the Dusun plant in the mountain areas using the dry method is usually called parai tidong , the cultivation method in the Ranau plain differs in that wet rice is grown here . Over time, Ranahon was shortened to Ranau .

Demographics

According to the last census, the population of Ranau is 8,970. Ranau is mainly populated by the indigenous Dusun group . There is also a small Chinese community of Hakka , Hokkien and other Chinese who settled in Ranau a long time ago. In addition, one can find Malays , Kadazan , Murut and other indigenous peoples of Sabah.

language

Although most of the people in Ranau can speak Malay, the locals - especially the older generation - speak Dusun as their main language. The Chinese community speaks Mandarin and Chinese dialects (especially Hakka Chinese ). Members of other ethnic groups living in the district speak their own languages. English is spoken here and there; it is mainly the younger generation and people with higher education who can use this language.

economy

Located at an altitude of about 550 m above sea level, Ranau is known for its hilly landscape and as the largest supplier of highland vegetables in the state of Sabah.

In addition to agriculture, Ranau is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sabah as a starting point for hikes to the Kinabalu and Kinabalu National Park , the Poring Hot Springs and the Sabah Tea Garden . Industry linked to the tourism sector is mainly present in Kundasang .

In Mesilau near Kundasang there is a dairy farm called Desa Cattle (Sabah) Sdn. Bhd .

Until its closure in 1999, Ranau was home to Malaysia's only copper mine, the Mamut Copper Mine . From 1975 onwards, gold and silver were also extracted in the open-cast mine in addition to copper. In the past few years, the damage caused by the mine has become increasingly evident and politicians and local environmentalists have called for a comprehensive rehabilitation of the site.
