Jörg Ranau

Jörg Ranau (born July 2, 1955 in Hanover ) is a German diplomat and currently the German ambassador to Riyadh .

Life

After graduating from the Bismarck School in Hanover , Ranau did his military service in the Air Force between 1974 and 1976 and was temporarily deployed to the NATO headquarters in Brunssum . He then studied economics between 1976 and 1981 at the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University of Hanover and graduated with a degree in economics . After an internship in Renault's marketing department in Paris , he joined the Foreign Service in 1982 .

Jörg Ranau is married and has two children.

career

After completing his training as an attaché , Ranau was a consultant in the Department for the Middle East and North Africa at the Foreign Office in Bonn . This was followed by a position as a consultant for European Political Cooperation (EPZ) and the Council of Europe in the Foreign Office and from 1985 to 1988 as a permanent representative of the Consul General in Jeddah , before he was then until 1991 a consultant for economics and politics at the embassy in Spain . After a subsequent assignment as a consultant in the human resources department of the Foreign Office, he was Deputy Head of the Department for Economic Relations with Central and Eastern Europe at the Foreign Office in Berlin between 1994 and 1997 .

Ranau then was Deputy Executive Director for Germany at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London from 1997 to 1999 and until 2002 Head of the Department for Economic and Trade Promotion at the Embassy in the UK . He then returned to the Foreign Office in Berlin, where he was head of the Department for Nuclear Non-Proliferation, Nuclear Policy and Energy Policy before he was head of the Liaison Office of the Federal Republic of Germany at the Palestinian Authority between May 2006 and June 2008 . Using his experience there, he also gave lectures on the possibility of peace between Israel and the Palestinian territories .

From July 2008 to 2011 Jörg Ranau was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Singapore . In August 2011 he became the representative for export control and technology and sub-department head in the Federal Foreign Office . In this function he was also a lecturer at events organized by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control on the subject of foreign policy developments and export control policy . From 2014 he was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Peru. In October 2018 Ranau was appointed ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
