The PETRONAS project aims to utilize the oil and gas reserves in the offshore production areas off Sabah and Sarawak, especially in the sea areas of Gumusut / Kakap, Kinabalu Deep and East, Kebabangan and Malikai. In addition to exploration, the project also includes two mainland projects:

The Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) in Kimanis serves as a receiving, storage and export station for oil and natural gas from Sabah's offshore fields. The natural gas is also processed and compressed. The capacity of the SOGT is 300,000 barrels of oil and 28 million standard cubic meters of natural gas per day. The loading of the crude oil for export takes place ten kilometers from Kimanis on the open sea at special anchorages in Kimanis Bay .

Technical specifications

The diameter of the pipeline is 36 inches, which is about one meter. The 522-kilometer route runs through mountainous and swampy terrain with an elevation profile between sea level and 1027 m. The rainy climate is considered to be a particular stress.

On the route there are two measuring stations, two pigging stations , three compressor stations with bulkhead valves and a local control room as well as 19 other valve stations. The Sabah-Sarawak natural gas pipeline begins at the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) in Kimanis.

The pipeline ends in Bintulu, Sarawak at the PETRONAS LNG Complex . This 276 hectare industrial complex includes three natural gas liquefaction plants operated by Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd, MLNG Dua Sdn Bhd and MLNG Tiga Sdn Bhd. All three companies are Petronas joint ventures. The liquefied natural gas is exported from Bintulu by ship.

The pipeline system will be equipped right from the start so that it can be expanded to supply end users in Sabah and Sarawak in the future.

Pipeline opponent

The Baram tribe, who are one of the indigenous people of Sarawak, have protested against the Sabah-Sarawak gas pipeline several times since December 2010. The Baram community has accused Petronas of failing to fulfill their promises related to the construction of the pipeline. It is about the financial compensation for the deforestation of a 40 meter wide strip of forest within the Baram reserve of Long Atip for the construction and later operation of the pipeline route as well as the illegal extraction of precious wood outside the pipeline protection strip by contractors from Petronas.
