Chong Kah Kiat

Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat (born June 2, 1948 in Kudat , Sabah ) is a Malaysian politician and was the 13th Prime Minister of the State of Sabah. He succeeded Osu Sukam in 2001 and was replaced by Musa Aman in 2003 . Chong, a Hakka , was also the former leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

Life

Chong Kah Kiat (Chinese 章 家 傑) was born on June 2, 1948 in Kudat, British North Borneo . He is a graduate of the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand , from which he graduated in 1975 with a Masters in Law ( LLM ).

Political career

Chong won in 1981 as a candidate for the Kudat constituency and entered the state parliament for BERJAYA . The following year he was appointed Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister. He held this post until April 1985, when he had to vacate Datuk Wong Phin Chung of the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) party .

In March 1987 he became a member of the party's highest body, the Supreme Council . When he realized he was losing influence, he left the party.

In 1989, Chong founded the LDP party with some leading Chinese politicians in 1989 and took on the role of general secretary for an interim period . Eventually he became party chairman in 1991 . He did not run for the 1994 elections to the state parliament, but a year later he was appointed senator to the Dewan Negara , the Senate of the Malaysian parliament. He then became a Minister in the Cabinet of the Malaysian Prime Minister. He resigned from this office in March 1999 to run as a candidate for the Kudat constituency in the Sabah elections, where he regained his traditional stronghold of Kudat and became Minister of Tourism, Environment, Science and Technology.

Chong was sworn in as the 13th Prime Minister of Sabah in 2001 through the rotation principle introduced by Mahathir bin Mohamad in 1994 .

When Musa Aman replaced him in 2003, Chong was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and also retained his responsibility for tourism, culture and the environment. The rotation principle was subsequently abolished and from then on the post of prime minister was filled by the United Malays National Organization party . Chong resigned from the post of Deputy Prime Minister in April 2007 "on principle" .
