Václav Chalupa (born December 7, 1967 in Jindřichův Hradec ) is a former Czech rower who took part in the Olympic Games six times and reached the final three times.

Career

His father Václav Chalupa senior was a rower at the Olympic Games in 1960 and 1964. Chalupa junior was trained first by his father and from 1989 to 2004 by the two-time Olympic medalist Zdeněk Pecka . When he first participated in the Olympics in Seoul in 1988 , Chalupa started in a quadruple scull and finished eleventh. In 1990 Chalupa's career began in the single with a victory at the World Cup in San Diego. At the 1990 World Rowing Championships, Chalupa received the silver medal behind the Estonian Jüri Jaanson, who was still competing for the Soviet Union . In 1991 there were two World Cup victories on Lake Piediluco and in Lucerne, at the World Championships in Vienna the German Thomas Lange won ahead of Chalupa. A year later at the Olympic Games in 1992 , Lange crossed the finish line before Chalupa.

From 1993 Chalupa no longer competed for Czechoslovakia , but for the Czech Republic. He won three world cup regattas, Duisburg, Tampere and Lucerne, at the world championships he finished second behind the Canadian Derek Porter . After four silver medals in a row at the respective season highlight, Chalupa missed the medal ranks at the World Championships for the first time in 1994 and finished in fifth place. In 1995 the Slovenian Iztok Čop won ahead of Jüri Jaanson, Chalupa received his first bronze medal. In 1996 Chalupa missed the entire World Cup season, finishing fifth at the Olympic Games .

After a fifth place at the World Rowing Championships in 1997, Chalupa received the bronze medal again in 1998, ahead of him were New Zealander Rob Waddell and Xeno Müller from Switzerland; A fourth place followed in 1999. In 2000 in Munich Chalupa won another World Cup regatta after six years. At the Olympic Games in Sydney , he missed the finals and did not appear in the B final. That Chalupa still belonged to the world class, he proved by winning the world championship bronze in 2001 behind the Norwegian Olaf Tufte and Iztok Čop. In 2002 and 2003 he only just missed the medal places as fourth. Also in 2008 Chalupa appeared as a rowing oars , with Jakub Makovička he took eighth place at the Olympic Games in Beijing in a double without a helmsman . Also in his last regatta season in 2009 Chalupa started with Makovička in two without, at the World Championships in Poznan they took tenth place; Together with helmsman Oldřich Hejdušek they also competed in the non-Olympic boat class two with helmsman and won the silver medal behind the two from the United States.

In 2012 Chalupa received the Thomas Keller Medal from the FISA World Rowing Association .
