Joseph Pairin Kitingan

Yang Berhomat Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Pairin Kitingan SPDK , PMN (born August 17, 1940 in Papar ) is a Malaysian politician and was the 7th Prime Minister of the State of Sabah . He succeeded Harris Salleh in April 1985 and remained in office until March 1994. Since March 2004 he has been Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure Development in Sabah. Kitingan is the founder and chairman of the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) party.

Life

Pairin was born in Papar in 1940 . He went to La Salle Secondary School , a school for boys , in Kota Kinabalu . He won a scholarship funded by the Colombo Plan and studied law at the University of Adelaide . After completing his studies, he returned to Sabah and initially worked as a lawyer in the Sabah Ministry of Justice and later as a public prosecutor. He then worked as a lawyer in a local law firm.

Joseph Pairin Kitingan is a Catholic and married to Genevieve Lee Chau Ha, a retired teacher. Her two sons, Alexander and Daniel, are trained lawyers.

His brother Jeffrey Gapari Kitingan is also a politician and former vice-president of the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) party. Previously he was a member of the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS), Parti Angkatan Keadilan Rakyat (AKAR Bersatu), the United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organization (UPKO) and finally - after getting him to join the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) - the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

Political career

Joseph Pairin began his active time in politics in 1975. 1976 he moved under the BERJAYA -Regierung as a candidate for the constituency of Tambunan in the Legislative Assembly of Sabah one. Harris Salleh , Prime Minister from 1976 to 1985, named him Cabinet Secretary. Tambunan has been the stronghold of Kitingan's electorate ever since.

Over time, Joseph Pairin became disappointed with the leadership of BERJAYA, as he felt that the party had strayed from its original goals. As a result of his clear positioning in the Kaamatan dispute , he was urged to resign from his ministerial post. In mid-1982, Pairin left the party, but remained an independent member of the Tambunan constituency.

In December 1984 he stood as an independent candidate in his constituency of Tambunan against the ruling party in order to defend his mandate. His claim to leadership in a state that had officially declared Islam the state religion was controversial because of its own Christian faith. His political opponents, however, had no qualms about playing this sensitive card in the election campaign. Nevertheless, Joseph Pairin was able to defend his mandate with a large majority of votes.

In March 1985, Joseph Pairin Kitingan founded the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) party , also known as the United Sabah Party . Despite all the adversities, he managed to register the PBS as a political party at the last minute, thus creating the conditions for running against the incumbent government in the April 1985 elections.

To win the election, BERJAYA had allied itself with the United Sabah National Organization (USNO) party, but that coalition disbanded as a result of the unrest among the indigenous tribes. This gave PBS the majority of votes and Kitingan was sworn in as the seventh Prime Minister of Sabah. He remained in office from April 1985 to March 1994 and led his party to victory in the four subsequent elections in 1985, 1986, 1990 and 1994.

Shortly after the 1994 election victory, the debacle broke out: after the winner of the election had been announced, almost all the MPs of the PBS defected to the opposing Barisan Nasional . Kitingan was denied the swearing-in as prime minister and instead Tun Sakaran Dandai was sworn in as the eighth prime minister of Sabah by the UMNO.

Kadazan-Dusun Cultural Association

Pairin holds the office of Huguan Siou , the supreme leader of the Kadazan-Dusun . He is also President of the Kadazan-Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA).
