He then studied law at London University and became a member of the Lincoln's Inn Bar Association . In 1983 he received the Barrister-at-Law . He is married to Stella Kong Yin Kiun.

Political career

After returning to Malaysia, Yong worked as a lawyer in Sabah and Labuan from 1984 to 1985 . From 1985 to June 2001 he was a member of the Sabah Legislative Assembly for the Likas constituency. His career in government began in April 1985 as Assistant State Minister of Local Government & Housing (April 1985 to December 1987) and from January as Assistant State Minister of Finance . From July 1990 to January 10, 1994, he served as Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister of Industrial Development . He was reappointed Deputy Prime Minister from March 24, 1994 to May 28, 1996, and was Minister of Local Government and Housing during this time.

Yong became Prime Minister of Sabah on May 28, 1996 through the rotation principle practiced at that time by the Barisan Nasional coalition party . Before that, he already held the post of Deputy Prime Minister. In 1994 he left the United Sabah Party (PBS), citing his disappointment with their leadership, and founded the SAPP party. The new party, however, became a member of the Barisan Nasional coalition party, which was led in Sabah by the PBS.

Defamation in the double-six case

On February 29, 2012, the Supreme Court sentenced Yong to pay former Prime Minister Harris Salleh a fine of 1 million ringgits in compensation for the defamatory allegation that Harris Salleh had "blood on his hands" in connection with the death of Tun Fuad Stephens . The use of the words "crime" and "assassination" is defamatory in this context.

On June 6, 1976, then Prime Minister Tun Fuad Stephens and several cabinet members were on board a flight from Labuan to Kota Kinabalu . The plane crashed about 2 km from Kota Kinabalu International Airport ; all occupants on board were killed. Immediately after the accident, conspiracy theories about the cause of the crash emerged, as Harris Salleh became Prime Minister of Sabah as a result of the accident.

Awards and honors

In 1990, Yong was awarded the Second Degree - Panglima Gemilang Darjah Kinabalu (PGDK) - of the Illustrious Order of Kinabalu .

As part of the celebration of the birthday of Yang di-Pertuan Agong , Yong was awarded the Panglima Jasa Negara (PJN) order in 1996. The award includes the right to use the title Datuk and put it in front of the name.
