TYT Tun Datuk Mohammad Hamdan Bin Abdullah , SMN , SPDK , PGDK , born Indan Kari (born February 22, 1922 in Kampung Labuaya, Tuaran , British North Borneo ; † October 10, 1977 in Kota Kinabalu , Sabah , Malaysia ) was a politician and from 1975 to 1977 the 4th  Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah , the ceremonial head of state of the Malaysian state of Sabah.

Life

Mohd Hamdan Bin Abdulla was born as Indan Kari on February 22, 1922 in Kampung Labuaya, Tuaran, British North Borneo. He was the second of three children of OKK Kari bin Angur and his wife Boyod Umpun and belonged to the Lotud ethnic group , a subgroup of the Kadazan-Dusun native to Tuaran . His father, who served in the Chartered Company Police Department on Pulau Gaya , died before he was born.

Tun Hamdan initially lived with his aunt and uncle OKK Anggor and attended the 5-year St. John elementary school in Tuaran. From 1935 to 1940 he was a student at the state secondary school of Tuaran. Shortly after finishing school, he joined the North Borneo Chartered Company in Tambunan as a native clerk on March 1, 1941 . On August 1, 1947, he was appointed Native Chief Grade II for Tuaran on the basis of the Native Administration Ordinance 1937 and was responsible in this role for certain administrative and judicial matters of the indigenous population of Tuaran.

His many years of experience with the local population, which he had made during his years as a native clerk , helped him to gain respect and recognition in the district and led to his promotion to district chief on January 1, 1958 .

Tun Mohd Hamdan died during his tenure on October 10, 1977 in the Istana, the palace of the head of state in Kota Kinabalu. His remains were interred in the state mausoleum at the Sabah State Mosque in Kota Kinabalu.

Political career

As part of the preparations for Sabah's accession to the Malaya Federation , Mohd Hamdan came into contact in 1962 with the United Sabah National Organization (USNO) , which first elected him to the board and later made him vice chairman.

On September 5, 1962, he briefly represented Mohd Said bin Keruak as a member of the Legislative Council when he was in the United Kingdom for four months . He finally became a regular member of parliament on June 30, 1964. He successfully defended his mandate in the 1967 national elections. From October 19, 1968, he was political secretary to the finance minister.

On December 1, 1971, he withdrew from active political work. He resigned from parliament and the Treasury Department to serve on the Sabah Padi Board . As chairman of this state institution, he worked hard to improve the yields of rice farmers by introducing two cultivation cycles per year, optimized irrigation and mechanization of production.

On July 28, 1975, he was sworn in as the fourth Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah .

Honors

One of the highest honors the State of Malaysia has to bestow on him was given on June 1, 1977: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong awarded him the title Darjah Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara (SMN) . This award includes the right to put the honorary title “doing” in front of the name.

Mohd Hamdan was awarded the first degree of Darjah Yang Amat Mulia Kinabalu (The Illustrious Order of Kinabalu) in 1963, which includes the title "Datuk Seri Panglima".
