Yamtuan Besar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yamtuan Besar is a Malaysian title of nobility and denotes the head of the state of Negeri Sembilan . The Yamtuan Besar is elected for life by the four Undang , the local rulers of the districts of Sungai Ujong , Jelebu , Johol and Rembau .

Negeri Sembilan is the only Malaysian state with an elective monarchy . Since 1773 the head has been determined in this way. The system of the electoral monarchy at the sub-national level was adopted after Malaysia's independence in 1957 at the federal level for the determination of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong , but here the terms of office are limited to five years.
