Shah Alam is the capital of the Malaysian state of Selangor . The city center is approximately 25 km southwest of Kuala Lumpur . As of the 2011 census, almost 650,000 people lived in Shah Alam.

The city was founded in 1963. It was named after Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah , the Sultan of Selangor who died in 1960 . Formerly there were oil palm - and rubber plantations in today's urban area. In 1978, Shah Alam became the capital of the most populous Malaysian state of Selangor, after the original capital Kuala Lumpur was spun off from Selangor in 1974 and made federal territory and then Klang temporarily exercised the capital function. On October 10, 2000, Shah Alam was raised as the 7th place in Malaysia to be a city ( Bandar raya "city").

Shah Alam is structured similarly to the neighboring cities of Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya . Large residential areas with single-family houses are lined up around the city center, which extremely extend the city area (approx. 295 km²). The urban area is divided into so-called Seksyens (from the English sections). These are numbered. Several federal highways run through Shah Alam, and the well-developed road network allows for a low-complication flow of traffic. There are significantly fewer traffic jams than in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

Trains of the KTM Komuter railway company stop at two stations in the Shah Alam city area: Shah Alam and Batu Tiga . A light rail system is being planned to improve local public transport.

The main business is local Malaysian carmaker Proton , which has a large plant in Shah Alam. Proton was followed by a host of other companies, both Malaysian and foreign, and flourished the local economy , much like the rest of Malaysia. Shah Alam is considered an industrial center , but it is also an attractive place to live for many workers who work in Kuala Lumpur.

The most famous building in the city is the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque , which was completed on March 11, 1988 . It is the largest mosque in Malaysia. There is also a large, modern multifunctional stadium in Shah Alam , the Shah Alam Stadium , which seats 69,372 spectators.

There are countless shopping centers with a variety of stores from both national and international companies. Despite the size of the city, due to the high proportion of Muslims and the function as the Sultan's residence, the nightlife of Shah Alam offers hardly any nightlife options apart from restaurants. For example, there is not a single cinema on the city's premises.
