Kota Bharu (also Kota Baru , Kota Bahru or Kota Baharu ) is the capital of the Kelantan State in Malaysia . In 2004 the population was estimated at 280,000 inhabitants. The name of the city is Malay and means New City or New Fortress / Fort .

The city is located in the northeast of the Malaysian mainland around 20 kilometers east of the border with Thailand and is bounded in the west by the Sungai Kelantan , at the mouth of which the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea border each other. In addition to the many Buddhist temples in Thai style and mosques, the museums as well as the unique architecture of the Sultan's palace (can only be viewed from the outside) and earlier Sultan's buildings in the city center are worth seeing.

Kota Bharu is one of the most conservative cities in Malaysia and, after many years of government by the Islamist PAS, has the strictest Islamic laws.

Kota Bharu was the landing site of the Japanese invaders in 1941.

Tourists who want to visit the state of Kelantan or are passing through to the Pulau Perhentian islands use the Kota Bharu airport as a transport hub. It is located about seven kilometers from the city center. Several airlines operate routes to Kuala Lumpur every day .
