The Sultan Ismail Petra Airport is the only airport of the Malaysian city of Kota Bharu and the largest in the northern state of Kelantan . The three largest Malaysian airlines operate scheduled flights to Kuala Lumpur and Penang several times a day .
The new, modern passenger terminal went into operation in 2002 and can handle up to 1.4 million passengers a year. The L-shaped building is equipped with a check-in hall , baggage claim , shops and catering facilities as well as three passenger boarding bridges . The architecture of the two-story building makes use of local and Islamic architectural elements in many places.
The airport site extends in a west-east direction, about seven kilometers from the city center. A four-lane expressway connects the airport to the urban road network. The apron and terminal are located north of the runway, less than two kilometers from the coast to the South China Sea . Two taxiways connect the so far only apron with the only runway . A flight school is located west of the main apron, the control tower near the parking lot east of the passenger building. A new apron will be under construction east of the existing facilities in mid-2008.
