Proton Persona

The first generation was designed by the designer Azlan Othman at Proton and replaced the sedan version of the successful Wira , which was already marketed as a persona in some export markets .

The car is available as a four-door notchback and is based on the same platform as the GEN • 2 and Satria Neo models . There is also a special Proton Persona SE model. All Persona models are currently manufactured at the Tanjung Malim plant in Perak . A similar sedan, the Proton Prevé, has been available since 2012, but due to the continued high demand, Proton continued to produce the Persona until 2016.

description

body

The Proton Persona is essentially a sedan variant of the GEN • 2 hatchback that was introduced in 2004. The name was taken over from the export models of the previous model Wira for the European and Australian markets. It is aimed at Gn-2 customers, but the GEN-2 remains in production.

The biggest difference between the two models is the Persona's larger trunk, as Malaysians prefer sedan vehicles in the home market. The higher roof line compared to the GEN-2 also means greater headroom on the rear seat bench in the interior.

inner space

In contrast to the GEN-2, the Persona has a glove compartment. The eye-catching analog clock in the Gen-2 has been replaced by a digital one that is now integrated into the instrument holder. In addition, the door panels were redesigned to include more ergonomic switches for the power windows and better door handles, and the pseudo sport seats were replaced with more conventional but more comfortable seats. The processing quality has been significantly increased and the suspension settings have been revised, which now promise greater comfort.

In the revised version of the GEN-2, which was presented on March 3, 2008, the interior of the Persona is also used.

engine

The 1.6-liter, four-cylinder in-line engine from the Campro series is the same 112 hp (82 kW) unit that is used on other Proton models, but with a redesigned oil pan that is more robust. A corrected control of the automatic transmission avoids the too frequent shifting and somewhat conceals the well-known weak torque of the Campro engine in the lower and middle speed ranges. Since the beginning of 2008 the Persona has also been equipped with the new Campro engines with variable intake, which leads to improvements in terms of low torque.

Facelift

Proton Persona SE
  • 2008: A Campro engine with variable intake tract (IAFM) is introduced in all equipment variants. The Proton emblems are now black and silver instead of blue and gold as before. Persona SE was introduced on August 26th. It was created according to the wishes of Persona customers. The Persona SE has a body package, various aluminum rims are available, matt silver door handles and the same radiator grille, leather interior and a GPS navigation system on the windshield that includes SD cards. It is available in the special colors Blue Haze (blue) and Brilliant Red (red).
  • 2009: No changes except for the inscription in the license plate frame "2008 Best Model of the Year by Frost & Sullivan" instead of "Our Pride and Joy" as before
Proton Persona Elegance
Proton Persona Elegance
  • 2010: The Persona gets a facelift on March 18th and the new name Proton Persona Elegance . It gets new headlights, a modified grille, front and rear bumpers, an improved body and LED taillights. The engine power remains the same, but a new 32-bit engine control from VDO is used.

Admission to the market

Since the pricing was very attractive (at RM 44,999 to RM 55,800, approx. RM 10,000 cheaper than the Gen-2), the demand exceeded the delivery capacity. Even before the vehicle was presented, over 2000 orders were received. Within two weeks of the performance, the number rose to 11,000. Two weeks later there were already 19,000 orders. Originally, the Persona was supposed to build 4000 vehicles per month from the start of production, but Proton has decided to gradually expand production to the estimated 4000 cars per month in order to be able to meet the unexpected demand.

As a result of the introduction of the Persona, sales of the Waja and Gen-2 fell so significantly that many Proton dealers offered high discounts of up to RM 9,000 in order to be able to sell their remaining Waja and GEN-2 copies. With the installation of the new Campro CPS motor in the Waja and GEN-2, this trend was stopped, and the two models now occupy a slightly more luxurious market segment than the Persona.

Export market

On March 10, 2008, the British Proton branch announced that the Proton Persona would now be offered on the British market under the name Proton GEN • 2 Persona , whereas in other countries such as Singapore and Australia the car was still offered as a Persona . Except in Great Britain, the persona is still called Gen-2 Persona in Indonesia . The Persona was also introduced in Saudi Arabia (November 22, 2008) and Egypt (November 24, 2008), in Egypt together with Gen-2.

Although the Persona was officially on sale in the UK in 2008, only four were sold and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders placed this model among the lowest-selling in the UK.

Prices

At the Asian Auto- Bosch Fuel Efficiency Awards 2008 , the Proton Persona took first place in the family sedan category with a fuel consumption of just 6.6 l / 100 km. The Persona was also named Best Car of the Year by Frost & Sullivan in 2008 .
