The Proton Arena (also Proton Jumbuck ) is a small Ute with front-wheel drive , the 2002 to 2010 from the Malaysian car manufacturer Proton was produced. It is the only Proton pickup and the only model that sold better abroad than at home.

Construction and performance

body

The arena was mainly based on the 400 / Wira . From the front it looks the same and has the same mechanics, but has only two seats in a Wira-like driver's cab and a flatbed at the rear measuring 1636 mm × 1349 mm × 415 mm.

In Malaysia there was the arena in three variants, which are provided with a wide variety of flatbed fittings and equipment packages, but the mechanics did not differ from each other:

  • The "Freestyle", the basic model with an open platform, unclad metal frame, steel rims and axle caps
  • The "Sportdeck", a variant with an open platform like the Freestyle, but with a clad metal frame, a body package and aluminum rims.
  • The "Fastback", the top model with a tonneau attachment , similar to a hatchback model , body package and aluminum rims

chassis

Like the 400, the arena also had a self-supporting construction, but had an additional ladder frame to stiffen and absorb the additional loads on the platform.

The Arena had the same independent suspension on the front axle as the 400 on MacPherson struts and wishbones with stabilizer, but a rigid rear axle on leaf springs with torsion bars. The 14 "disc brakes at the front are internally ventilated, while the rear has 9" drum brakes. The latter have control valves for adjusting the braking force according to the load (LSPV). The car is equipped with heavy-duty off-road tires. Lotus provided better handling properties.

engine

Like the Wira, the Arena is powered by a 1.5 liter four-cylinder in-line engine with 12 valves and electronic fuel injection (EFI) from the Mitsubishi Orion series (type 4G15). It is equipped with the EMS 400 motor control from our own production. The Arena fulfills the European emission standard Euro II, has a low fuel consumption, a liter output of 60.6 HP / l (44.6 kW / l) and a power-to-weight ratio of 11.73 kg / HP (15.95 kg / kW). The petrol consumption is 5.8 l / 100 km outside the town and 8.5 l / 100 km inside town, but the engine has a very difficult time with the fully loaded car.

marketing

In Malaysia, the car was advertised as a vehicle for business and leisure. The naked freestyle variant is actually only intended for transport needs, while the sports deck is also recommended for leisure activities. The Fastback, the top model, was designed for private individuals. Of course, all variants can be used for commercial and leisure tasks.

Although the arena was also offered in the home market, it sold better in export markets such as the UK , Australia and South Africa , where utes are more common. Australia, where the nearest local supplier charges AU $ 8,000 more for its Utes, was the largest buyer. The arena had reoccupied a niche previously occupied by the Subaru Brumby .

safety

No independent safety tests have yet been carried out in Malaysia. In September 2009 a crash test was carried out with the Jumbuck from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). The result was very bad; received only one star out of a possible five. The Jumbuck lacks many safety devices in modern cars, such as airbags or ABS . The lack of these safety devices is supposed to keep the selling price low, but leads to bad reviews. The Proton representative in Australia has criticized the selection of the Jumbuck for the crash test, as this vehicle is the last on the old platform, which is to be replaced by a new one in mid-2010.
