Bastian Steger (born March 19, 1981 in Oberviechtach ) is a German table tennis player . Since the 2014/15 season he played for the table tennis Bundesliga club SV Werder Bremen . For the 2019/20 season he moved to TSV Bad Königshofen . The right-handed attacking player plays in shakehand style. His special shot is the backhand topspin .

youth

At the age of seven Bastian Steger came to table tennis under the guidance of his father. In 1990 he was the winner of the popular mini-championships . After that he devoted himself more intensively to table tennis, but gave priority to a solid school education. Several victories at school and youth events in the state of Bavaria followed. In 1995 he was together with Daniel Demleitner German master of the pupils in doubles. In singles he reached the final of the juniors in 1999.

Establishment among the world's best

For the 2000/01 season, Steger moved to Borussia Düsseldorf in the 1st Bundesliga, and in September 2001 he made it into the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time . In 2002 he took part in a European championship for the first time and won silver with the team, just like the following year , in which he also played his first world championship and became German champion with Borussia Düsseldorf. At the 2005 World Cup , he was among the last 32 and won bronze in the team in 2006 . This year he also switched to the Bundesliga club TTC Frickenhausen , with whom he was instant champion in the 2006/07 season . From 2007 to 2009 he was involved in Germany's first three European championship titles, in 2010 his first Europe Top 12 participation followed, which he finished with 9th place, and the silver medal with the team at the World Cup . For the 2010/11 season he moved within the Bundesliga to 1. FC Saarbrücken .

With the entry into the finals of the Pro Tour Finals in Korea 2010 Bastian Steger experienced his career highlight so far. Only in the final did he have to admit defeat to Jun Mizutani from Japan after he had previously thrown teammate Dimitrij Ovtcharov and former Olympic champion Ryu Seung-min from the tournament. By participating in the finals, Bastian Steger climbed to 22nd place in the world rankings in January 2011, and at the European Championships in the same year he won his fourth gold medal with the team.

On March 6, 2011 he achieved a double triumph at the German championship in Bamberg: After his double victory with partner Lars Hielscher , he was able to defeat Dimitrij Ovtcharov in the final of the men's singles ; both finals were only decided in the seventh set. In March 2012 he was able to defend his title in the absence of the German record champions Timo Boll. In the final he again put Dimitrij Ovtcharov in his place in a seven-set match.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London he reached the semi-finals with the German national team after victories over Sweden and Austria, which were lost 3-1 to China. Steger lost both in doubles and the decisive third individual. In the bronze medal game, the German team defeated Hong Kong 3-1. There was also silver again this year at the Team World Cup . At the European Championships in 2012 and 2013 , Steger made it to the semi-finals in each individual and won the bronze medal. In 2013 he lost to team-mate and eventual winner Dimitrij Ovtcharov 2: 4. He was also part of the team that won the title, but was not used.

For the 2014/15 season he moved to Werder Bremen . In September and October 2014 he achieved his best position to date with 18th place in the world rankings, but did not take part in the team world and European championships this year. His good placement enabled him to participate in the Europe Top 16 in early 2015, where he was eliminated with three defeats in the group stage. At the 2015 World Cup he was eliminated in the round of 64, so that this year he fell back in the world rankings and was not nominated for the European Championship . In the following months, however, he improved again, reached 8th place in the Europe Top 16 in 2016 and successfully took part in the qualification for the Olympic Games , where, as in 2012, he was part of the team and with Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Timo Boll Won bronze. His performance in the Europe Top 16, in which Timo Boll was missing, enabled him to take part in the World Cup for the first time . There he reached the round of 16, but missed three match points against Simon Gauzy in the sixth set and two more match points in the seventh set and lost 3: 4. By not participating in the 2016 European Championship , he was not represented at three European championships in a row, although he was one of the four best-placed Germans in the world rankings. At the Team World Cup he won silver again with the German team, although Boll, Ovtcharov and Franziska were only available to a limited extent due to injury problems.

Steger was a sports soldier and was a staff sergeant in the Mainz sports promotion group .

Play style

Like almost all top players, Steger is an attacking player. The specialty of Steger's game, however, is that he acts strongly on both sides and does not only rely on his forehand. He can fall back on a good back top spin and counter. This also allows him to be in an almost neutral position at the table, as he does not have to keep running around his backhand.
