Competition mode teams

44 men's and 40 women's teams competed.

The game mode was the same as in the previous EM 2002 . However, there was a modification to the effect that the teams of the host country were automatically qualified for the round of 16, regardless of their placement in the Europa League.

Cutting off the Germans

Dirk Schimmelpfennig was the head coach . Istvan Korpa looked after the men, Richard Prause trained the women.

Men's team

Due to the placement in the Europa League , namely seventh place, the German team had to compete in the round of 16. Here she came after a 3-0 win against Greece in the quarter-finals, where she defeated Serbia and Montenegro 3-1. She also won 3-1 in the semifinals against the ČSSR. The final against Belarus was lost 3-1. Here Zoltan Fejer-Konnerth got the only point.

Women's team

In the Europa League , the German women came fourth. Therefore, they only intervened in the quarter-finals of this EM. Here they were defeated by the eventual European champions Italy 2: 3. In the games for places 5 to 8 they lost to Russia and won against Serbia and Montenegro. This was enough for 7th place.

useful information

  • The Swede Jan-Ove Waldner renounced his participation after an injury beforehand.
  • Ni Xialian (Luxembourg) was unable to defend her title due to pregnancy.

ITTF meeting

The ETTU Congress met parallel to the competitions. He decided that a maximum of 16 teams may start at the next European Championship. These qualify through the 1st division of the Europa League , in which the teams from places 1 to 16 of the current EM 2003 start. Because of the reduced number of teams, the duration of a European Championship is shortened.
