The Kosei Line ( Japanese 湖西 線 , Kosei-sen ) is a Japanese railway line operated by the West Japan Railway Company in the metropolitan area of Osaka-Kobe-Kyōto (Keihanshin). It runs from Yamashina in Yamashina-ku , Kyoto Prefecture to Ōmi-Shiotsu in Nagahama , Shiga Prefecture . The name of the route means "western lake line", which refers to the route along the shores of Lake Biwa .

business

The Kosei line is used by many working people to commute to Osaka , Kobe or Kyoto . Since the commuting distances are sometimes very long, the offer on the Kosei line is differentiated into local, rapid and limited express connections. Many connections are tied from Yamashina on the Tōkaidō main line to Kyoto, where u. a. there is a change to the Tōkaidō Shinkansen .

In addition to the daytime connections, the Nihonkai night train , which runs between Osaka and Aomori, also uses the Kosei line. The Kosei line is also used for freight transport.

Until March 2011 there were also the express connections Raichō and Thunderbird , which operated between Osaka and Kanazawa on the Tōkaidō main line, the Kosei line and Hokuriku main line .

Vehicle use

Class 113, 117, 221 and 223 trains are used on the local connections. Vehicles of the 223 series are also used on Rapid and Limited Express connections.

Hokuriku Shinkansen

The Kosei Line is an option for the planned extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Kanazawa to Osaka. In contrast to two other possible routing variants that are to be investigated, the Kosei line option would not convert the Kosei line from Cape gauge to standard gauge. Instead, the currently experimental Kikan Kahen Densha would be used, which would have re-gauged undercarriages and thus could switch from the standard-gauge Shinkansen network to the Cape-gauge Kosei line.
