Panagiotis Gionis ( Greek Παναγιώτης Γκιώνης, born January 7, 1980 in Marousi ) is a Greek table tennis player . He is a modern defender with frequent topspin inserts and strong counterattacks . He took part in the Olympic Games three times.

successes

Gionis was four times Greek individual champion. At the Mediterranean Games in Pescara in 2009, he won the final against Croatian Andrej Gaćina . Since 1997 he has participated in 15 world championships , where he reached sixth place in the team competition in 1997 .

In the final of the European table tennis team championships in 2013 between Greece and Germany, the 64th in the world rankings won, after surprising successes in the previous rounds, initially in five sets against the later European team champion Patrick Baum and lost in the decisive game in 1: 3 Sentences against Dimitrij Ovtcharov . In the individual, the 33-year-old won a bronze medal, but was defeated in the game for third place to Belarusian Vladimir Samsonov with 2: 4 sets.

Gionis played for various European clubs. In 2001 he moved from the Greek club AC Pere to Germany for the second division WTTF Ramstein, and in 2003 he joined the French TT club in Metz. From 2008 to 2014 he played in France for Angers Vaillante Sports, with whose team he reached the final of the ETTU Cup in 2012 . He was then signed by Borussia Düsseldorf , with whose team he won the German championship and cup in the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons .

At the beginning of 2016 his move from Düsseldorf to the Polish club Bogoria Grodzisk was announced, from there he moved to the Czech Republic to TTC Ostrava in 2017.

Gionis uses a Petr Korbel FL blade from Butterfly with the Butterfly Tenergy 05 rubber on the forehand and the Butterfly Feint Long II rubber on the backhand.
