European table tennis championship 1972

The 8th European Table Tennis Championships took place from April 15 to 22, 1972 in Rotterdam (Netherlands) in the Energiehal.

Participants from 28 countries were represented; Turkey had canceled its participation. Hungary won three titles, namely in the women's team competition and in the doubles with Judit Magos / Henriette Lotaller and István Jónyer / Péter Rózsás . Soja Rudnowa defended their title in the women's singles and Stanislaw Gomoskow / Soja Rudnowa in the mixed match in the Soviet Union . The remaining gold medals went to Sweden, namely in the team competition and in the men's individual with Stellan Bengtsson .

The German women's team reached the final, the men's doubles Eberhard Schöler / János Borzsei (Hungary) made it to the semi-finals. The GDR started with a women's team, which eventually came in seventh. GDR gentlemen were not represented.

Competition mode teams

The men's teams competed in ten preliminary round groups with three teams each. The grouping took place after the placement of the last European championship in 1970 , namely group 1: No. 1,20,21 - group 2: No. 2,19,22 - group 3: No. 3,18,23 etc. were carried out Competitions according to the Swaythling Cup system for teams of three , d. H. three players play a maximum of nine singles. A double is not provided. The first group in the preliminary round then fought for places 1 to 10, the second for places 11 to 20 and the third for places 21 and above. These fights took place in two intermediate round groups. Then it was about the final placement, as the first of the intermediate rounds played against each other, as well as the second and third.

The women's teams played in an analog mode. They competed in eight preliminary round groups, the team fights were held in the Corbillon Cup system for teams of two with a maximum of four singles and one doubles.

Cutting off the Germans

Men's team Germany

The German men's team prevailed in group 5 against Finland and Wales with 5-0 each. In intermediate group A they were defeated by Sweden 5: 3 and Hungary 5: 4, Denmark and Austria were clearly defeated. So she came in third and then had to play against third in Group B, the USSR, for fifth. This match was won 5-2 and Germany finished fifth.

Women's team Germany

The German women defeated Spain 3-0 and Bulgaria 3-2 (after 0-2 deficit) in group three and thus came first. After victories against the ČSSR (3: 2), England (3: 1) and Yugoslavia (3: 0), they also took the top spot in the group B intermediate round and thus reached the final. In this they had no chance in the 0-3 defeat.

Women's team GDR

The GDR team was first in group 5, ahead of Greece (3: 0) and Denmark (3: 1). However, it remained in the intermediate group A against Hungary (0: 3), USSR (0: 3) and Romania (2: 3) and came fourth. The game against fourth in group B, Yugoslavia, for seventh place was won by the GDR 3-1.
