The 10th European Table Tennis Championship took place in Prague from March 27th to April 4th, 1976 . The venue was the Fucic Park, where 26 of the 32 member countries competed. More than 70,000 spectators followed the competitions.

With Jacques Secrétin , a Frenchman won the European Championship for the first time. The Englishwoman Jill Hammersley won gold in singles and doubles. There were two bronze medals for Germany, one from Wiebke Hendriksen and one from Monika Kneip / Agnes Simon .

Competition mode teams

The teams played in two performance categories, Category 1 and the lower Category 2. In each of the two categories, two groups with usually at least six teams played in the mode of everyone against everyone. The two table first and second from category 1 played for places 1 to 4, the third and fourth for places 5 to 8 and the fifth and sixth for places 9 to 12. The two table first and second from category 2 played similarly around places 13 to 16, etc.

In the placement games for places 1 to 4, the first from Group A played against the second from Group B. The winners fought for the European Championship, the losers for 3rd and 4th places. The other places were played out in the same way.

Romania was previously assigned to Category 1 in Group A. Since Romania withdrew its team, this group started with only five teams.

The women's team matches were carried out according to the Corbillon Cup system : 2 singles, one doubles, 2 singles. The men played according to the Swaythling Cup system , i.e. a maximum of 9 singles and no doubles.

  • The Russian Anatoli Strokatow also behaved unsportsmanlike when he illegally changed his jersey during the game.
  • 140 referees from 11 countries were on duty.
  • Up to 8 kg weight loss was measured in the active population.
  • Around 30 former athletes with a world title were among the spectators. This meeting was organized by the Swaythling Club International .
