Anatoly Viktorovich Strokatov
Anatoly Wiktorowitsch Strokatow ( Russian Анатолий Викторович Строкатов ; born March 10, 1955 in Lvov ) is a Soviet table tennis player who had his peak in the 1970s. He is vice European champion in singles and vice world champion in mixed.
Career
Strokatow recorded his first international successes at the European Youth Championships in 1971 and 1972, where he won a total of six titles. In 1971 he won all kinds of titles in Ostend: singles, doubles with Wiktor Fursow, mixed with Elmira Antonyan and team competition. A year later he was defeated in the individual final to the Yugoslav Miran Savnic. He defended the title in doubles with Wiktor Fursow and in mixed with Elmira Antonyan.
Strokatow was USSR individual champion in 1976. From 1971 to 1978 he took part in three European championships and four world championships . At the European Championships in 1976 he was second in the individual. He lost in the final against French Jacques Secrétin . In 1978 he reached the semi-finals in mixed with Valentina Popova .
At the 1973 World Cup , he won silver in a mixed with Asta Stankene-Gedraitite behind Liang Geliang / Li Li from China. The best placement at the European ranking tournament TOP-12 came in 1976 and 1977 with sixth place each, in 1976 he was champion of the Soviet Union.
When he returned from the European Championship in Germany in 1978, one hundred undeclared US dollars were found on him. In addition to an accusation of smuggling, he was not awarded the title of Master of Sports, which is otherwise common among internationally successful athletes, for this incident . As a further consequence, a travel ban was imposed on him in 1981, in other sources the reason given was the smuggling of jeans. In 1984 he moved to Czechoslovakia and played there for five years for a Soviet military team. Subsequently, began to work as a trainer in the army in Leningrad. However, due to differences in the terms of the contract, it was terminated. He still played for a team in Lublin, Poland, and finally ended his career in 1992.
In the USSR rankings Strokatow finished first in 1976, in the ITTF world rankings he was eleventh in mid-1976.
Private
Strokatow lives and works in Lwow (as of 2009). He was in a relationship with his twin partner Valentina Popova for three years, and ended the relationship shortly before the planned marriage. In December 1981 he married Larissa, with whom he has a daughter. He runs a company that manufactures and sells canned food.
