Elmira Korjunowna Antonyan ( Russian Эльмира Корюновна Антонян ; Armenian Էլմիրա Անտոնյան ; born June 28, 1955 in Yerevan , Armenian SSR , USSR ) is a former Armenian table tennis player who was among the world's best in the 1970s. She was twice European champion with the Soviet team and senior world champion in singles.

The surname is often written Antonjan or Antonian , as a first name is sometimes Elwira ( Russian Эльвира ).

youth

Antonyan started for Dinamo Yerevan. From 1969 to 1974 she was nominated six times for the European Youth Championship. She won ten gold medals: in 1969 in singles, in 1971 and 1972 in mixed with Anatoli Strokatow , in 1974 in singles, doubles with Tatjana Ferdman and mixed with Bagrat Burnazjan and from 1971 to 1974 four times in a row with the Russian youth team. With Tatjana Ferdman she reached the double final in 1973.

Adults

In 1976 Antonyan won the USSR championship in singles, doubles with Tatjana Ferdman and in mixed with Sarkis Sarchajan . She took part in the European Championships in 1974 and 1976 . Both times she was European champion with the Russian women's team.

She was nominated four times for participation in world championships , namely in 1971 , 1973 , 1975 and 1977 . Her greatest success was winning the silver medal in mixed with Sarkis Sarchajan in 1975. At this World Cup, she reached the semi-finals in doubles with Tatjana Ferdman.

She achieved her best result at a European ranking tournament TOP-12 in 1976 with fourth place. In the USSR rankings she finished first in 1976, in the ITTF world rankings she was ninth in mid-1975.

International senior tournaments

Antonyan achieved several successes at international senior tournaments:

  • 1996 World Championship 40+: Gold in the individual
  • 1997 European Over 40 Championship: Second place in the individual
  • 1998 World Championship 40+: Gold in doubles with Jutta Trapp
  • 2005 European Over 50 Championship: Gold in doubles with Theresia Földy
  • 2006 World Championship 50+: Gold in doubles with Jutta Trapp

trainer

After the end of her career, she worked as a coach or as a player-coach. From 1969 to 1977 she was in charge of the Soviet national team. She coached the Armenian women's national team from 1983 to 1993. In 1996 she moved to Italy, where she worked as a player-coach at the TT Recoaro / Agostini Bozen (Serie A-2) until 2003.

In 2003 she moved to Switzerland and joined the TTC Wetzikon association. Here she played in the men's team. At the same time, she strengthened women's teams from other clubs, such as Young Stars Zurich 1 in 2006 in the National League A and from 2010 Uster in the National League B. In 2004, she coached the TTC Bassersdorf.

Private

Elmira Antonyan was awarded the title of Master of Sports of the International Class . She is married to the Swiss Artur Brunner and has a younger sister named Narine , who was also internationally successful.
