European table tennis championship 1974

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 9th European Table Tennis Championships took place in April 1974 in Novi Sad (Yugoslavia) in the exhibition hall.

The Swedish men's team became European champions for the sixth time in a row. In the women’s category, the Soviet Union won the title, as did the USSR mixed Stanislaw Gomoskow / Soja Rudnowa . The most successful was Hungary, which won three gold medals: in the women's singles Judit Magos , in the ladies' doubles Judit Magos / Henriette Lotaller and in the men's doubles István Jónyer / Tibor Klampár . There are also three silver medals for Hungary. Milan Orlowski (ČSSR) became the men's European champion in singles .

Of the German teams, the men reached place 8 and the women place 6. Ursula Hirschmüller reached the quarter-finals in the women's singles , Edit Wetzel / Wiebke Hendriksen in the women's doubles and Jochen Leiß / Wilfried Lieck in the men's doubles . The national coach was the Swede Hans Alsér , the women were looked after by Hannelore Schlaf .

Competition mode teams

A total of 27 men's and 23 women's teams took part.

The competition mode for the teams has been changed compared to the previous European Championships. For both women and men, the top 12 of the previous European Championship in 1972 competed in groups of six, A and B, where they played for the title. The remaining nations were drawn into groups of three or two and played down for 13th place. Here there were five groups C, D, E, F, G for men and four groups C, D, E, F for women.

Similar to the pair cross system (without doubles), the first and second of groups A and B played places 1 to 4, the third and fourth places 5 to 8, and the fifth and sixth places 9 to 12.

The first of the remaining groups fought each against each other for places 13 to 17 for men or for places 13 to 16 for women, the second for places 18 to 22 for men or places 17 up to 20 for women, etc.

A team fight was held for the men according to the Swaythling Cup system in teams of three , i.e. H. Each against each other without doubles. The women played according to the Corbillon Cup system for teams of two .

Cutting off the Germans

Men's team Germany

The German men's team prevailed in preliminary group A against Austria and Romania, but lost Sweden, Hungary and France. So she finished fourth and then played in the main round for places 5 to 8. Here she was defeated by the USSR with 0: 5 and against France with 2: 5 and finished eighth.

Women's team Germany

The German women started in group B and won against France and Bulgaria 3-0. The games against the USSR and Yugoslavia were lost with the same result, and they were also defeated 3-2 to England. This was enough for third place and the main rounds for places 5 to 8. Here they defeated Sweden 3: 1 and lost in the fight for place 5 against Romania with 1: 3. So they finished sixth.
