The 38th European Table Tennis Championships took place from 3 to 8 September 2019 in French Nantes instead. Only the team competitions were held.
The defending champions were Germany for the men and Romania for the women who were able to defend their titles. The German men didn't lose a single game.
mode
The mode has been changed compared to the previous team EM and provides three levels.
qualification
In the first qualification stage, the 18 teams that had occupied places 2-19 (or 2-20, since the host was not counted) at the last European Championship, were divided into Group A, all other teams (apart from the reigning European champions and Host) in group B.
In group A, the teams were again divided into six groups of 3 teams. In each group, everyone played against each other, each with a return match. The group first and second qualified directly for the final stage, while the group third played the second qualification stage.
In group B, the teams were divided into groups of 3 or 4 teams, depending on the number of participants, and there also played twice, each against each other. The first and second group qualified for the second qualification level, where they were divided into groups of 3 or 4 with the 6 thirds in group A and 10 additional qualifiers for the final level.
Final stage
In the last stage, 24 teams took part, which played the European champions, whereby the reigning European champion and the host were automatically qualified. They were divided into 8 groups of 3 teams and played there in the mode everyone against everyone. The group winners advanced to the quarter-finals, where the knockout system continued.
All games were played in best-of-5 mode and thus consisted of 3 to 5 singles, which, again played in best-of-5 mode, consisted of 3 to 5 sets.
