He plays in the top Russian league with UMMC Verkhnaya Pyshma and took part in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games .

Career

Alexander Schibajew started playing table tennis at the age of 7. At the European Youth Championships he won gold in mixed doubles in the cadet age group in 2005, and silver in singles among the juniors in 2008. Since 2009 he has taken part in all world championships and came there several times under the last 32. At the 2010 World Cup in Russia he reached 6th place with the team.

In 2011 he moved up to the top 100 in the world rankings and won silver in doubles at the European Championships . In the following year he was able to qualify for the Olympic Games in London, where he - meanwhile in world rankings 29th and thus for the first time the best-placed Russian player - came under the last 32. At the European Championships in 2013 he won the bronze medal with the team. In 2014 he qualified for the World Cup with his fifth place at the DHS Europe Cup , but he was eliminated in the preliminary round. In doubles with Kirill Skatschkow he won bronze at the European Championships the following year . In 2016 he was able to qualify with 3rd place in the Europe TOP-16 again for the World Cup and a little later for the Olympic Games, in which he came under the last 32 and then lost to Timo Boll 3: 4. At the World Cup he was eliminated again without a win, but was able to improve even further in the Europe Top 16 in February 2017 and win silver. He made it into the main round after defending five match points in the last group game against Marcos Freitas and made up a 2: 8 deficit in the last set of the semi-final game against Simon Gauzy , with whom he clashed after the match. At the World Cup he reached the main round and there after defeating Chuang Chih-Yuan the quarterfinals, which he lost 3: 4 to Dimitrij Ovtcharov . However, he did not take part in the European and World Team Championships in 2017 and 2018.
