Content store

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A content store is a platform for downloading or streaming media content (content). The term "store" refers to chargeable goods, but most of the content is often offered free of charge.

history

With the spread of Apple's iTunes Store from 2003, large collections of songs were offered for a fee. As a direct and legal alternative to offers such as Napster and together with the MP3 player iPod , significant market shares could be captured in the distribution of music. When Apple presented the first smartphone in the form of the iPhone in 2007 , a corresponding app store was presented the following year , whose apps only work on iOS devices. Google, Microsoft, Amazon and others followed suit in the years that followed. This has v. a. led to closed platforms on proprietary operating systems .

Demarcation

In contrast to an app store , a content store can in principle acquire all types of media content and digital goods. A (classic) store that sells data carriers is different from such virtual platforms. Download portals and streaming portals can be viewed as forms of stores.
