Simon Gauzy (* 25. October 1994 in Toulouse ) is a French table tennis - national team . In 2016 he became vice European champion in singles.
Career
Simon Gauzy celebrated his first international success in 2008 in the cadet age group when he won the European Youth Championship with the team and took silver in mixed doubles. In 2009 he repeated these successes and also won gold in singles and doubles. In 2010 he took part in a world championship for adults for the first time and won bronze at the Youth Olympic Games .
In 2013 he won the French table tennis championship in singles and doubles with Emmanuel Lebesson , and at the end of the year he also won the U-21 competition at the World Tour Grand Finals. For the 2013/14 season he joined the German Bundesliga club TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen . Since December 2014 he has been listed as the best French player in the world .
At the European Games in Baku he won the silver medal with the team and made it to the round of 16 in the individual. At the EM in the same year , the French team reached the semi-finals. This year Gauzy also took part in the World Cup for the first time after a 4th place in the Europe Top-16 , where he moved into the main round and was eliminated there against Fan Zhendong . At the beginning of 2016 he again took part in the Europe Top-16, where he finished third in his group, which was enough to qualify for the World Cup again.
With the team he reached the quarter-finals at the 2016 World Cup , where the team was eliminated 2: 3 against the English team, which they had defeated 3-0 in the group stage. Gauzy also qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , but lost his first game in the round of 32 in singles and France lost 3-2 to the United Kingdom in team competition. In October 2016 he reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup and won the silver medal in the individual competition of the European Championships . In 2017, he again won bronze with the team at the European Championships and took third place in the Europe Top 16 , qualifying for the World Cup . There he defeated, among other things, the world number seven Jun Mizutani and finished fourth, so that he moved up to 8th place in the world rankings and thus for the first time a top 10 position. He also qualified for the first time for the individual competition of the Grand Finals , where he lost to the vice world champion of 2015 Fang Bo in the first round .
The year 2018 was less successful for him, at the European Championships he was only among the last 32, at the World Cup , in which he was able to participate through a host wildcard , he was defeated by Lee Sang-su in the round of 16 with 3: 4. At the beginning of 2019 he was no longer among the top 30 in the world rankings, but at the world championship he managed a completely surprising victory over world number two Xu Xin and reaching the quarter-finals. With Ochsenhausen he won the cup and the German championship double this year, and with the French team he won the European Championship bronze for the third time in a row .
