The telecommunications battalion 801 (FmBtl801) emerged from the NVA's communications regiment 5 . On October 8, 1990, OTL Gerd Lips took over the command of the 5th intelligence regiment. It was stationed in the Fünfeichen barracks in Neubrandenburg and was subordinate to the Panzer Grenadier Brigade 41 "Vorpommern".

assignment

The telecommunications battalion 801 had the task of ensuring the command capability of Panzer Grenadier Brigade 41 "Vorpommern" with telecommunications command equipment. For this purpose, it set up and operated a communications network for the transmission of telephone calls, telex, faxes and data in addition to the brigade's command posts. Wire or cable, radio and radio link connections as well as satellite communication among other things were used as transmission paths.

history

In 1939 the former Wehrmacht area was converted into two prisoner-of-war camps. In the following five years around 60,000 prisoners of war were housed in Fünfeichen, but over 5,000 people were also killed under the Nazi regime during this time. At the end of the Second World War , an internment camp was set up in Fünfeichen under Russian leadership, and again around 4,000–9,000 deaths were recorded among the internees in the following three years. The final demolition of the camp in 1950 made space for the barracked People's Police, which was founded two years later . It was not until six years later, in 1958, that telecommunication forces of the National People's Army (NVA) were stationed in Fünfeichen for the first time . From 1990 onwards, when the East-West conflict ended, the Fünfeichen barracks were placed under the Bundeswehr and the 801 division telecommunications battalion was set up. Over the years there have been several structural changes, reclassifications and name changes. In essence, however, the association remained in place over the years. As part of the new army structure of the Bundeswehr, the long-standing telecommunications tradition in Fünfeichen will come to an end with the dissolution of telecommunications battalion 801 on March 31, 2016.

After the appeal on September 5, 2015, Telecommunications Battalion 801 received a final special order on September 7, 2015 as part of refugee aid. A building to accommodate 300 refugees was to be provided on the barracks site in the shortest possible time. The order was successfully implemented within 24 hours and a company building that was no longer used was made habitable again. Sometimes up to 150 soldiers were deployed in these 24 hours. Subsequently, the 801 telecommunications battalion took over the reception and accommodation of 148 refugees on the night of September 8, 2015 to September 9, 2015. Personnel and material support in refugee aid remained an order of the Telecommunications Battalion 801 until its final dissolution. The headquarters and telecommunications company of the Panzer Grenadier Brigade took over the telecommunications order of the former battalion on April 1, 2016.
