In 2012 and 2018 he was European champion in doubles, in 2015 European champion in team competition. He participated in the 2008 , 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games .

From 2011 to 2016 Robert Gardos trained at the Werner Schlager Academy in Schwechat, Austria.

Career

ITTF World Tour 2017, German Open

Gardos achieved his first successes as a Hungarian in his youth. In 1993 he became European youth champion in singles and mixed with Mihaela Encea (Romania). In 1996 he became an Austrian citizen. This enabled him to take part in eight world championships and four European championships for Austria between 2003 and 2010. In the 1998/99 season he played in the super league with the Austrian club TTC Kuchl.

Gardos experienced his heyday before he switched to the German table tennis league (DTTL) . Before moving to the Russian top club UMMC Jektarinenburg in 2009, he was already under contract with the Spanish Champions League favorite Cajagranada. Parallel to his active Spanish time, he also celebrated his peak internationally as number three of the Austrian national team. Together with the Austrian regular players Chen Weixing and Werner Schlager , he finished third in the team competition at the 2008 European Championships . In the singles the surprise succeeded, here too he finished third with a quarter-final win against João Monteiro . At the European Championships in 2012 he was European champion in doubles with Daniel Habesohn , in 2013 and 2015 they won the silver medal. In 2015 he became European champion with the Austrian team after a surprising 3-2 success in the final over Germany.

In the 2010/11 DTTL season, the Austrian was able to help the TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau to a playoff place with a 21: 6 balance . In a 3-2 victory in the semifinals against Düsseldorf, he won 3-2 against Timo Boll , then number two in the world. Grenzau was eliminated in the second leg. He has been playing for Chartres (France) since the 2011/12 season . With Chartres, he immediately won the French championship three times in a row and a total of four times by 2017, and also made it to the final of the Champions League in 2012/13 .

He reached his best world ranking position, 18th in March 2015, unusually late at the age of 36. In the same year he won the bronze medal with the Austrian national team at the European Games in Baku and the first gold medal at the European Championship , where he also won silver in doubles with Daniel Habesohn . At the 2016 World Cup , he made it to the round of 16 with the Austrian team, and to the quarter-finals at the Olympic Games . In the individual, however, he was eliminated at the Olympics by a loss to Ovidiu Ionescu .
