The Werner Schlager Academy Betriebs GmbH (WSA) was an Austrian table tennis high-performance training center in Schwechat near Vienna .

It was the national base for the Austrian men's table tennis team ( Robert Gardos , Stefan Fegerl , Daniel Habesohn , Chen Weixing , Dominik Habesohn).

It was also a permanent training location for a number of well-known international table tennis players such as Marcos Freitas , João Monteiro , Mihai Bobocica , Daniela Dodean and Matilda Ekholm, as well as for young players such as Alexandre Robinot , Tomas Polansky, Tamolwan Khetkuan and Marie Migot.

history

After the world title in table tennis by Werner Schlager in 2003, the idea for a national and international training center in Vienna was formed in July of 2005. Schwechat was distinguished as a location by its close proximity to Vienna Airport and the rapid transit railway connection and was therefore given preference over Stockerau. The project was supported by Butterfly , the state of Lower Austria , the International Table Tennis Association and the Austrian Ministry of Sports .

After around three years of preparation, construction began at the end of 2008 at the Möhringgasse 2–4 site. The Werner Schlager Academy was opened on January 11, 2011. In December 2015 she had to file for bankruptcy due to economic problems . Training was finally discontinued at the end of 2016.

Training hall and equipment

The Multiversum in Schwechat, where the WSA is located.

There is space for up to 36 tables in the 7.3 meter high training hall with an area of 60 × 30 meters. This makes it the largest hall in Europe designed purely for table tennis.

The light intensity can be set up to 1500 lx. A red Gerflor Taraflex floor (which is used at almost all large table tennis events) is permanently installed in the entire hall. Underneath there is an elaborate wooden construction that is intended to cushion vibrations as well as possible.

There is a gymnastics (or warm-up) room next to the training hall. The building complex also houses a table tennis and running shop, a fitness center, several massage rooms, a players lounge and a restaurant.

Next to the WSA hall is the 1,500 square meter Multiversum event hall with seating for up to 3,500 spectators.

Training load and players

In 2013 there were a total of 580 training visits from 66 nations (excluding the European Championship) in the WSA.

In 2011, 2012 and 2013 the Chinese national table tennis team held their preparation for the table tennis world championship in the training center.

A number of top players were permanent training guests and lived in Schwechat all year round. While there were only 19 in the year it opened, in 2015 over 50 players lived here permanently.

Table tennis school

In addition to training in professional groups, the Werner Schlager Academy also made it possible for ambitious club, championship, hobby and leisure players as well as beginners to develop themselves further under professional conditions and under the guidance of professional trainers. Even in the amateur area, tournaments and events with up to 150 active participants were held regularly.
