Matilda Ekholm (born June 15, 1982 in Linköping ) is a Swedish table tennis player . She qualified three times for participation in the Olympic Games, but was only approved by the Swedish Olympic Committee the third time.

Matilda Ekholm has been training at the Werner Schlager Academy in Schwechat, Austria since 2014 and played for the WSA partner club SVNÖ Ströck. In 2018 she was signed by the German Bundesliga club ttc berlin .

Career

Matilda Ekholm played for the Swedish clubs Vikingstad SK (1990-1995), Saab BTK (1995-2000), Rönnige SK (2000-2001) and Ängby SK (2001-2004) before moving abroad in 2004. In 2000 and 2001 she won the individual Swedish Junior Championships. In 2012 she became the Swedish adult champion for the fourth time.

Since 2000 she has appeared in the ITTF Pro Tour tournaments. In 2005 she made it into the top 200 in the world, this year she also took part in the World and European Championships for the first time , in which she was always represented in the years that followed. At club level, she moved in 2004 from the Swedish club Ängby SK to the German club TTSV Saarlouis-Fraulautern , whose women's team was playing in the second division at the time. In 2007 she was promoted to the first division, the following year she left the club for Spain to the Photoprix Vic.

In 2008 she was in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time and qualified for the Olympic Games , for which she was not approved by the Swedish NOK due to a lack of prospects of success. In 2010 she won bronze singles and silver doubles at the Morocco Open and thus her first medals on the World Tour . In 2012, she qualified for the first time in singles for the Grand Finals, where she reached the quarter-finals. She also qualified again for the Olympic Games . On the grounds that there was no chance that Matilda Ekholm could achieve a place in the top eight, the Swedish NOK refused her permission to start again. At this time Ekholm was world number 51, the male Swedish players Pär Gerell and Jörgen Persson , both of whom were allowed to start in singles, positions 80 and 88. Ekholm was able to take part in the World Cup in 2012 for the first time , but was eliminated without a win. In February 2013 she reached 34th place in the world, a personal record, and she also won bronze at the European Championships in doubles with Galia Dvorak this year . Another EM bronze medal followed with the team in 2014 .

After qualifying for the third time for the Olympic Games , she finally received approval from the Swedish NOK in 2016 and was among the best 32 in singles. Together with Mattias Karlsson , she also won European Championship silver in mixed in October . From 2016 Ekholm also formed a double with Georgina Póta , together they qualified for the Grand Finals in 2017 . Ekholm was also able to take part in the Europe Top 16 for the first time in 2017 and qualify there for the World Cup , in which it reached the main round. In March and April it was at number 20 in the world rankings and thus higher than ever before. In the Europe Top 16 2018 she came fourth, which was again enough for the World Cup qualification , in doubles she won the European Championship bronze for the second time . In 2018 she was signed by ttc berlin eastside , with whom she became German champion in 2019.

In 2020 Matilda Ekholm ended her career.
