European table tennis championship 1978

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 11th European table tennis championship took place from March 10th to 19th, 1978 in Duisburg in the Rhein-Ruhr-Halle .

Hungary dominated this European championship by winning five gold medals: both men and women won the team competition, and Hungarian participants, Gábor Gergely and Judit Magos , also stood on the podium. In addition there is a "half gold medal" in doubles from Gábor Gergely with the Czech Milan Orlowski . Silver in the men's singles by István Jónyer , in the ladies doubles by Judit Magos / Gabriella Szabó and in the mixed by Tibor Klampár / Gabriella Szabó as well as bronze in the men singles by Tibor Kreisz and in the women singles by Gabriella Szabó underlined this dominance.

European champions in women's doubles were Maria Alexandru / Liana Mihuț from Romania.

The greatest success of the Germans was the win of the mixed competition by Wilfried Lieck / Wiebke Hendriksen . The pair of Peter Stellwag / Jochen Leiß took silver. The men's and women's teams came in eighth.

Competition mode teams

A total of 29 men's and 25 women's teams took part.

The mode of competition for the teams was the same as in the previous European Championship in 1976 . For both women and men, the top 12 of the last European Championship in 1976 competed in category 1 in groups of six A and B, where they played for the title. The remaining nations were also divided into two groups in Category 2.

Similar to the pair cross system (without doubles), the first and second of groups A and B played places 1 to 4, the third and fourth places 5 to 8, and the fifth and sixth places 9 to 12.

The first of the remaining groups fought each against each other for places 13 to 17 for men or for places 13 to 16 for women, the second for places 18 to 22 for men or places 17 up to 20 for women, etc.

A team fight was held for the men according to the Swaythling Cup system in teams of three , i.e. H. Each against each other without doubles. The women played according to the Corbillon Cup system for teams of two .
